COOPER: Bahrain GP - Team By Team
Inevitably, tires dominated the action in Bahrain but the good news was that we also saw some great wheel-to-wheel action, even if it sometimes got a little too close! Sebastian Vettel and RBR got their sums right and the German took full advantage of getting in front early to control the race. Lotus lost out on Saturday, but both drivers enjoyed great races as the black cars again looked good on the tires. Meanwhile, Force India showed impressive pace throughout, and Mercedes could not back up its qualifying speed come the race. Here’s how things panned out for the 11 teams:Red Bull RacingSebastian Vettel was fourth, third and second in the three practice sessions before securing second on the grid, while a Chinese GP collision penalty dropped Mark Webber from fifth to seventh. Vettel lost out to Fernando Alonso at the start but re-passed a few corners later. He took Nico Rosberg for the lead on lap 3, and never looked back as his three-stop strategy panned out perfectly. Webber ran second in the second stint, but he struggled with rear tire wear, which led to an early stop. In the closing laps, Webber was unable to defend himself from Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez, who demoted him to an eventual seventh. Scuderia FerrariFernando Alonso was fastest in FP3 but lost out to Nico Rosberg in qualifying. Having been quickest in FP1,adjustable handles, Felipe Massa qualified fourth on the hard tire. Alonso briefly got ahead of Sebastian Vettel on the first lap and was running a comfortable third when a stuck DRS flap led to unplanned stops on laps 7 and 8. After that, he had no DRS and did well to salvage a few points with eighth place. Massa damaged his wing on Adrian Sutil’s rear tire on the first lap, motorcycle levers, and then his race was spoiled by not one but two rear punctures, which left him down in 15th.McLaren MercedesAs in previous races, McLaren had new parts and spent the weekend chasing performance. For the fourth time in four events Jenson Button made Q3, and after not doing a flying lap, he started 10th. Sergio Perez, meanwhile, was 12th. Both men made good progress in the race and found themselves fighting each other Street Bi custom motorcycle helmets ke Levers for position. Contact between the pair angered Jenson and created more than a little stress on the pit wall, but they both survived, with Perez moving into sixth in the closing laps, having also had a moment with Fernando Alonso. An unplanned fourth stop dropped Button down to 10th by the flag.Lotus F1Lotus appeared to be in the fight for pole when Kimi Raikkonen was fastest overall on Friday, but the Finn lost performance when it mattered in qualifying and only managed ninth, adjustable levers, before gaining a spot from Lewis Hamilton’s penalty. Romain Grosjean was squeezed out of Q3 in 11th. Both cars quickly moved up the order, adjustable clutch lever, and a two-stop strategy worked well for Kimi, who got ahead of Paul Di Resta to claim second. Grosjean stopped three times but had better pace than Di Resta in the latter stages and was thus able to move into a season-best third as the team repeated its 2012 result.Mercedes F1Mercedes didn’t look like a pole challenger on Friday but, against expectations, Nico Rosberg proved fastest in Q3. Lewis Hamilton was fourth before a gearbox change penalty demoted him to ninth. Rosberg knew that life would be tough come the race but, after just three laps, he was down to t motorcycle brake lever hird, and from there he went backward. Ultimately, he needed four tire stops, and could not better ninth. Hamilton was a little happier, Seat Covers the Briton picking up pace as the race went on and enjoying scraps with several drivers. He made it past Mark Webber in the closing laps to claim a solid fifth place and some more useful points.Sauber F1After Nico Hulkenberg led in China,Motorcycle Racing Parts, Sauber lost a bit of form in Bahrain, adjustable Lever, the German managing only 14th. Teammate Esteban Gutierrez was 17th fastest and then went back to 22nd and last thanks to a five-place collision penalty he picked up in Shanghai. Hulkenberg had an untroubled race but the car was heavy on its rear tires and simply lacked speed, and he finished out of the points in 12th. Any hopes that Gutierrez had of progressing from the back of the grid were ended when he damaged his wing on the first lap, and after that unplanned stop, he could not better 18th, losing out to Charles Pic’s Caterham.Sahara Force IndiaPaul Di Resta was fifth in both sessions on Friday and backed up that form with the same result in qualifying,SportBike Levers, albeit helped by penalties. Teammate Adrian Sutil started alongside. Unlike China, the pair avoided each other on the first lap, but Sutil suffered a puncture after contact from Felipe Massa, and dropped to the back. Di Resta ran two stops which left him in a strong second place for a while, adjustable motorcycle levers, but ultimately both Lotus drivers overhauled him and demoted him to fourth. Sutil was the fastest car on the track for much of the race but he could not recover from his early stop, crossing the line in 13th. In fact, from lap two to lap 57, he completed the race five seconds faster than winner Sebastian Vettel!Williams F1The Williams drivers set identical times in Q1 but while Valterri Bottas got through, Pastor Maldonado didn’t, the Finn having done his lap first. They started in 15th and 17th place, respectively. Although still lacking performance, the FW35 at least proved itself to be better in the race than over one lap. Maldonado started on the hard tire and made good progress up to 11th at the flag, although he was still almost 20 seconds off the points. Bottas went for the medium at the start and struggled more with tire wear in the early stages on his way to 14th.Scuderia Toro RossoToro Rosso was not able to back up the great form shown by Daniel Ricciardo in China, and the Aussie had to settle for 13th, three places and 0.3s ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne. The Frenchman tangled with Valterri Bottas on lap one and was then hit hard by Giedo Van der Gard Cycle Sector e, leaving him with a puncture and floor damage. He carried on after pitting, but thanks to the damage, was forced to become the race’s only retirement after 16 laps. Ricciardo struggled throughout for grip and speed, and finished a somewhat frustrating 16th.Caterham F1Heikki Kovalainen returned to Caterham in FP1, driving a standard car before handing it back to Giedo van der Garde. The latest updates definitely worked on Charles Pic’s car, and the Frenchman beat the Marussias to take 19th, while Van der Garde was 21st. Both men moved up a spot, thanks to the Esteban Gutierrez penalty. Pic ran behind the Marussias early on but the green car was gentler on its tires and that allowed him to move ahead and finish 17th, only 9.7s behind Daniel Ricciardo’s Toro Rosso. Van der Garde broke his wing on Vergne’s STR on lap one, and after that early delay finished 21st.Marussia F1J adjustable handle ules Bianchi sat out FP1 in Bahrain to let test driver Rodolfo Gonzalez have a go, and the missing track time might have cost him, for he ended up 20th, behind Pic, while Max Chilton was slowest of all in 22nd. Both drivers then gained a position from the Esteban Gutierrez penalty. Jules and Max ran motorcycle helmet sale ahead of the Caterhams early on and showed solid pace, but ultimately tire wear proved troublesome, and both drivers were forced to make four stops, which cost them dearly. Bianchi finished 19th, one place and some 12s ahead of his teammate.Adam Cooper notched up his 28th season as a racing journalist in 2012. He has written about F1 for SPEED.com since 2005.
