But unlike fruit,Michael Kors Handbags, this veteran pianist guarantees a great harvest every year.At the first of a series of recitals on the southern Ontario summer festival circuit,Michael Kors Outlet, Laplante deployed a classic concert pianist’s solo program with vigorous style.The Music Niagara festival audience Thursday night at historic St. Mark’s Church in a town that’s better known as home to the Shaw Festival didn’t just get a good show — they also received some very intelligent and very important classical programming in the process.At age 63, Laplante has decades of experience under his fingers,Michael Kors Handbags, and he remains a vigorous virtuoso, able to send cascades of notes flying gracefully in the air whenever he plays.He mixed the thoughtful — the E-flat minor Prelude and Fugue by J.S. Bach, for example — with showpieces, the cornerstone being the “Wanderer” Fantasy by Franz Schubert.Laplante,Michael Kors Outlet, also provided us with exceptionally fine performances of pieces by two Quebec composers rarely heard in concert halls nowadays and who have not been recorded for more than a generation: François Morel and the late Jacques Hétu.Glenn Gould was a great advocate of Hétu’s mid-1960s Piano Variations, intellectual, atonal music that Laplante set off beautifully with Ferrucio Busoni’s ferocious piano transcription of Bach’s C Major Toccata, Adagio and Fugue, BWV 564.Then we were treated to the exotic tonal rainbows of Morel’s Deux études de sonorité (Two Studies in Sound), the first from the mid-1950s, the second from around the same vintage as Hétu’s Variations.Laplante tossed off with ease the huge technical demands of most of the evening’s pieces. There was Petrarch Sonnet No. 104 by Franz Liszt thrown into the mix as well. But the real thrill at Thursday’s concert came from the deep musicality and fine nuance that Laplante applied to every note he touched.It’s well worth trying to catch a repeat performance of this program at the Westben festival in Campbellford on Saturday.
