{What Surrey wants: Transportation infrastructure},mcm handbags
Surrey Board of Trade CEO Anita Huberman: investment in infrastructure is vitalBy Krisendra BisettyTue Sep 10, 2013 12:01am PSTWhen the then two-lane Pattullo Bridge was opened in 1937, Surrey was slowly emerging from an era when forestry and agriculture were among its mainstay industries.Seventy-six years later, it’s a bustling city with hundreds of businesses ranging from large manufacturers to global software developers. But its business leaders say Surrey’s economic vitality and livability – and ultimately prosperity – is under threat unless bold decisions are made that can keep it on its trajectory. With Surrey projected to overtake Vancouver as B.C.’s most populous city in 10 years – more than 1,200 people are setting up home in the municipality each month – it’s not only the Pattullo Bridge that needs to keep up with the times. The replacement of the old span with a six-lane bridge to connect with New Westminster and Burnaby is just one in a long list of changes the Surrey Board of Trade is pursuing. Another is the development of a light rail system, similar to the one in Portland, Oregon.“Investment in transportation infrastructure, implementation of light rail and other transit needs are absolutely integral as we build Surrey,” the Surrey Board of Trade’s CEO Anita Huberman said. But, with a bridge replacement price tag of almost $1 billion, there’s uncertainty over who will end up paying for it.There’s also concern over the imbalanced cost impact to users in the South Fraser region who are already affected by the tolled Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges.Added to that is the certainty that the Massey Tunnel in Delta will soon require replacing, which would leave only one “free” alternative in the Alex Fraser Bridge.Huberman says there’s been “limited response” from the government departments responsible for the bridge overhaul, including TransLink, “because now we have a referendum before us in November next year that is stalling everything, so we’re frustrated.”The new light rail transit system the board wants would connect communities south of the Fraser River.“SkyTrain does move people,” said Huberman, “but it doesn’t connect communities, mcm bags, it doesn’t beautify a city. Light rail is also cheaper to put in place in comparison to SkyTrain.”Huberman added that experience with light rail systems in other cities such as Portland shows that housing developments and businesses will invest and build near the easy-to-access rail stations.Surrey is home to approximately 480,000 people, but Huberman said another million are projected to move into the South Fraser region by 2025. But it’s not only transportation that drives the economy. The board has been fighting for the provincial government to provide more funds to Simon Fraser and Kwantlen Polytechnic universities so they can offer expanded curriculums.A third of Surrey’s population is under 19, so instead of having students go to other provinces or to other parts of B.C. for tertiary education, Huberman said statistics show that if they’re educated in Surrey, they’re going to work and live in the city, and that would contribute to Surrey’s economical potential. The board is also pushing, despite plenty of opposition from some residents in South Surrey and White Rock, for the expansion of coal shipping at Fraser Surrey Docks, the largest multi-purpose terminal on North America’s west coast. The proposed coal transfer station is part of the company’s plans to expand its business and make better use of its capacity.“It would increase quality jobs in Surrey. It would tie us very closely to international markets,” Huberman said. “It puts Surrey on the global map.”•Tags: Anita Huberman, Surrey, Surrey Board of Trade, TransLink, software, coal
