{Mountain bike events attract tourist dollars to B.C.}
Top and above: the BC Bike Race is an international draw with hundreds of riders covering 328 kilometres of world-class mountain biking trailsBy Glen KorstromTue Jul 9, 2013 12:01am PSTThe tourism sector is hosting more events using B.C.’s natural beauty to attract mountain bikers and what is believed to be their higher average disposable income.The largest and most significant of these events recently was the eight-day BC Bike Race, which ended July 6 and drew 550 riders from 33 countries.The race covered 328 kilometres of mostly rainforest trails on Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and in areas near Squamish and Whistler.The event pumped nearly $4 million in direct spending into the B.C. economy. That assumes that the race drew about 825 supporters and that everyone stayed several days on each side of the event and spent an average of $200 per day on accommodation and expenses, which is the industry standard for convention delegates.Mountain bike races also took place at Sun Peaks July 6 and 7,moncler on sale A Crucial memory survey, and on July 21, cross-country mountain bikers will meet for the Sun Peaks North Face Dirty Feet XC Mountain Bike Marathon.Mountain biking is an established sport in B.C.,moncler outlet, and trails are getting busier and more numerous.B.C. has hundreds of kilometres of mountain bike trails, and municipalities are increasingly spending to upgrade trails,moncler on sale,discount moncler jackets Oktober, create new ones and include corporate sponsors.In 2012,discount moncler jackets, the District of Squamish earmarked money for the first time to fund volunteer groups that maintain and build trails. It increased that funding 50% to $60,000 in 2013.The district has also landed corporate sponsors to help support its approximately 195 kilometres of mountain bike trail infrastructure, which has grown by about 20% in the past five years,moncler down jackets, Squamish’s Economic Development Officer Dan McRae told Business in Vancouver.Two years ago, Red Bull GmbH provided an undisclosed amount to help create the Full Nelson Trail near Squamish. And Telus Corp. (TSX;T) has agreed to provide funding to help maintain and build trails, based on a percentage of revenue generated from Squamish-area subscribers.Federal recreational infrastructure grants have helped the District of North Vancouver focus on upgrading its 62 kilometres of mountain bike trails, said spokeswoman Jeanine Bratina.The district recently decommissioned six kilometres of unsustainable trails while substantially upgrading eight kilometres of trail with better signs,moncler sale, bridges and steps.The economic impact of non-resident mountain bikers visiting B.C. is difficult to gauge.The Western Canada Mountain Bike Tourism Association’s Sea to Sky Mountain Biking Economic Impact Study in 2006 determined that non-residents spent $10.3 million in the Vancouver-to-Whistler corridor during that year’s three-month summer peak season.Executive director Martin Littlejohn told BIV that figure has likely doubled in the intervening years, based on anecdotal observations of busier trails and a more extensive trail network.But dwindling numbers of tourists coming to the province and bike-store owners’ assertion of trends cast doubt on that.B.C. had 4,811,000 international visitors in 2006 – 591,000 more than the 4,220,000 who visited the province in 2012, according to Statistics Canada.And local mountain bike sales seem to have reduced as a proportion of overall bike sales.Simon Coutts, who has operated bike shops in Vancouver for 27 years, said his business was once almost exclusively mountain bikes (see sidebar). About three-quarters of the bikes he now sells at Simon’s Bike Shop on Robson Street are street bikes or hybrid bikes.Bike retail market-share shake-upThe bike retail sector has shifted a lot since Simon’s Bike Shop owner Simon Coutts first opened a store on Seymour Street in 1986.A handful of local chains then had more market share. Cap’s Cycle, for example, had 15 stores at its peak. The company has since splintered, with children of co-founder Cap Hobbis operating separate bicycle businesses that share the Cap’s name.“It’s not just Cap’s Cycle,” Coutts said. “I used to have seven locations. Bicycle Sports Pacific had four locations. Reckless Rider had four locations. We all have [fewer locations] now.”Independent bicycle stores have helped fill some of the void, whereas larger sports gear retailers such as Comor Sports have increased the size of their bicycle selection.Tags: sports,moncler on sale also has cle, cycling, tourism, Statistics Canada, retail
