Q&A: Do airbags have a shelf Uggs for sale life
I have a 2000 Holden Commodore and I don t really have the means to sell it. It still drives well but I m worried that the airbags might b #file_links[D:\keywords14.txt,1,cheap ugg,S] e getting old. Do the airbags have an expiry date? Or do they need to be serviced? Got a question for Drive's experts? Email qa@drive.com.au Advertisement Answer The short answer is you don t need to do anything. But,ugg outlet, the long answer is, according to Holden the airbags are right for the life of the vehicle , but they don t actually put a time on a vehicle life . We spoke to another manufacturer who said airbags should remain in fully working condition for decades , suggesting it could be as long as 40 years. That s because airbags are sealed units so there is nothing to service. So you should be fine until the time comes for you to buy your next car. Mercedes told me my W163 MY2000 ML430 needs the airbags replaced at 15 years.Anyone else been told this? Commenter ML430 Benz Location Date and time August 16,cheap uggs, 2013, 10:34AM And I've had a dealer tell me that cars are designed to veer to the left, it has #file_links[D:\keywords13.txt,1,S] nothing to do with road camber or mis-alignment. Tip: Don't believe everything a dealer says. Commenter Jaques Location Date and time August 16, 2013, 12:09PM That may be right with Benz, because I know they started going down the green path in the mid-90s, with the result that they elected NOT to use certain widely-accepted plastics in their electrical systems. I had a low km Benz from that era that started to run very rough. It turned out that the insulation on the entire engine wiring harness had cracked, and the signals were all shorting out, because Benz decided not to use standard PVC insulation because it is not good for the environment. Benz didn't do a recall, but they did replace wiring harnesses on vehicles up to 8 years old. They have since started using a different insulator because of all these problems. So, it could be that there are #file_links[D:\keywords12.txt,1,S] parts of the airbag, or the electrical system of the airbag, that might be similarly affected. Benz told me at the time that they designed cars for a 10 year life because that we appropriate for Europe...we have an old car fleet in Australia. Commenter Roger Location Sydney Date and time August #file_links[D:\keywords11.txt,1,S] 16, 2013, 12:30PM they could last up to 40 years as said in the article. they could...but...would you risk it?how much your life is worth?plus, these days any cars approaching 20 years old are pretty much worth nothing on the market, prestige or not (A $200k Audi V8 of the early 91 are only worth a few grand now).So I guess by the time your beloved Merc reaches 15 years, most people (if not you) would have moved onto another car... and 15 years from now, I think the safety standard would probably improved so much that even cars with today's airbag may not be safe enough for the future. (For example - watched iRobot? average travel speed 300km/h requiring some sort of computerised auto pilot as no human reflects are safe enough) Commenter Ryan Location Date and time August 16, 2013, 12:40PM It may well be MB's policy to replace them after 15yr, from what I've seen though from some car wrecker yard shenanigans, their lifespan is probably around 20+ years and they all still function reliably every time. The SRS sensors however, seem to die long before the bags ever do. Commenter Location Sydney Date and time August 16, 2013, 1:14PM Ha ha Ha to the Mercedes driver. Your service should also cost $99 with genuine parts made in China and Australian Oil and Labour but I bet they hit you a thousand bucks because it's a Mercedes. I bet it blows smoke like a steam train at 20 years old too.In answer do airbags have a shelf life? At Ford they definitely do. That's how long they sat on the shelf before we got a recall notice on our Futura bought brand new. Three years later they decided to honour us with the passenger side airbag to match the badge neatly attached to the passenger glovebox. Apparently due to some oversight, none of th #file_links[D:\keywords15.txt,1,S] e Futuras were fitted with paid for said passenger airbag on the production line which at the time was part of the extras a Futura got over the standard Falcon. To this day I wonder if said missing airbags were discovered after some very embarrassing head on crashes when the missing airbags didn't inflate. Shelf life indeed. It was a 1996 EF Futura by the way. Commenter Any wonder they are going broke with quality control like that Location Melbourne Date and time August 16, 2013, 10:19PM Any wonder, you crack me up.A specification mistake on your Futura 18 years ago is neither an indication of quality control being amiss or reason for Ford's current woes. There was no legal requirement for a front passenger air bag at the time (and there still isn't provided you can meet the injury criteria without one). Even a skilled collision reconstuctionist would be stretched to directly attribute injuries to the presence or absence of such a supplementary restraint.Kepp trotting them out, you're funny! Commenter Digger Location Evansford Date and time August 19, 2013, 11:27AM My Land Rover says 10 years. Also, I have a constant SRS warning light on the dash. Might be a reminder, might be a fault...I'll let you know next time I drive into a pole. Commenter BusterH Location Date and time August 16, 2013, 11:05AM Would you like to comment?
