Patience will pay off for Hurst: Graf Basketball Nat Hurst may have spent years waiting patiently in the wings but Canberra #file_links[D:\keywords2.txt,1,S] Capitals coach Carrie Graf believes she is capable of emulating Kristi Harrower by playing for Australia well into her 30s. The Opals point guard spot is up for grabs after Harrower announced her international retirement after guiding Australia to bronze at last year's Olympics. Capitals playmaker Hurst and Bendigo veteran Harrower will go head-to-head at the AIS Arena on Sunday. Graf, the former Opals coach, said Hurst was ready to step out of Harrower's shadow and take her chance. Advertisement The 30-year-old is in the box seat to be Harrower's successor at next year's world championships in Turkey after she was preferred by new coach Brendan Joyce in the #file_links[D:\keywords1.txt,1,S] recent Oceania championships against New Zealand. ''With Nat's body type and the way she looks after it,cheap ugg, I can't see why she couldn't play into #file_links[D:\keywords5.txt,cheap uggs,1,S] her late 30 or even 40s, she keeps herself in great nick,'' Graf said. ''There's every reason Nat Hurst will make an Olympic team or two. ''There's no question Natty's got the tools, she's a great leader and can score in many ways. ''I think a lot of it for her is having the confidence she's an international player, #file_links[D:\keywords4.txt,1,S] and she is.'' The absence of London Olympic guards Samantha Richards (injured) and Kathleen MacLeod (pregnant) opens the door further for Hurst to make the Australian role her own. And Opals superstar Lauren Jackson endorsed Hurst as ''Australia's next point guard'' after the New Zealand series. Harrower revealed this year she tried to lure Hurst to Bendigo this season before Canberra swooped with a one-year deal. Despite still battling a groin injury, Hurst produced big performances in Canberra's West Coast-Adelaide road trip last weekend. But Graf wants her to be more assertive as the Capitals (1-2) prepare for a tough home stretch against heavyweights Bendigo and Dandenong. ''When you're carrying an injury and want to put a stamp on a game it's tough, you don't feel as dynamic,'' Graf said. ''The thing for her to understand in our team is there's organising, but there's also scoring for yourself. ''When she plays to score she's tough, she's maybe been a bit tentative in her scoring attack and trying to get everyone else involved.'' Hurst is relishing the chance to gauge her progress on Sunday against Harrower. ''Kristi is the point guard in Australia to look up to, it's a challenge I like to take on,'' Hurst said. ''[Opals coach] Brendan has shown a lot of trust in me so far and hopefully I can build up that relationship with him.'' Would you like to vote?
