He Who Replaced Willie G. - Ray Drea
It’s impossible to replenish a legend. And Willie G. Davidson is really a legend. He helped save the manufacturer from the dismal AMF a few years his styling influence are visible on just about everything that’s come out of The Motor Company over the past 50 years. As the direct descendant belonging to the motorcycle manufacturer’s founders, Harley-Davidson usually inHarley's Chief Styling Officer Ray Drea (3rd from left) looks admiringly at the man he replaced, Willie G. Davidson, from the press launch for your Sportster 48. Willie G.’s blood. And whenever he announced he was stepping down as Harley’s Chief Styli Motorcycle lever ng Officer in 2012, it created a large stir amongst H-D enthusiasts. Fortunately for Harley, it had talent standing in the wings to pick up where Willie G. left off. “Remember that it is my privilege to your job alongside many incredibly talented people during that company so i have great confidence not able to Harley-Davidson’s design leadership continue to build within the pre-eminence,Gucci Borse,Borse Gucci,” Willie G. said within the parting press state Motorcycle lever ment. The confidence he mentioned in the future of Harley-Davidson’s design leadership now rests about the shoulders of Ray Drea, new Chief Stylist for that Motor Company. Inquired about the massive shoes he needs to fill and whether he sounds like he has to fulfill that legacy, Drea said “I don’t determine if anybody could being quite honest. It’s pretty unique, don't merely what he’s accomplished, a whole consider we, the actual number of companies were you aware who have family in active roles and create a difference, more than a figurehead, in fact making a difference? It’s a large asset, your organization can you ever equal that?” If there’s a single person qualified to replace Willie G., it’s Drea. The 2 go in the past. Senior high school, believe it or not. Works out Drea left for school along with three of Willie G.’s kids - Karen, Bill and Michael, merely on the same grade. Michael is actually a talented artist as part of his own right and the man and Drea were within a special class together called “Fifth Year Art.” Their school was through an art show so Drea entered a Sportster tank he had customized. He already been painting motorcycles,Gucci Borse, cars and vans together with just gotten done doing up a Sportster tank for a customer,Gucci Sito Ufficiale,Gucci Outlet, painting a Frank Frazetta mural above and finishing it with gold leaf lettering and striping. Before he gave the tank back though, he thought i would come in within the show. Willie G. finnishes attending the art show with Michael and sees the Sportster vehicle's gas tank put on Drea’s graphics and asked his son if he knew which kid did the artwork on. Willie G. gave Michael a card and said, “Hey, just be sure you get him to give me a call.” Fresh away from school, Drea made available a business where he did custom painting, signs and graphic art serious the leap with the Black and Orange. His graphic design work included creating logos, a few of these involving jobs for Harley-Davidson, but extended to t-shirt artwork too for that National Street Rod Association and other hotrod events throughout the country. He did this before the computer age so Drea did everything byDrea features a long reputation for creating logos for Harley-Davidson and allows an in depth resume with custom painting,Borse Gucci, lettering and signs, graphic art,Gucci Sito Ufficiale, pinstriping and gold leaf. As you have seen, they can express his talents on any canvas. hand, and t-shirt graphics at that moment involved four-to-six color separations that had to be done individually. Thus his journey as an artisan began. Drea said the primary projects Willie G. put him on was meant to be all of the the 74’s (the 74 cubic-inch Shovelhead ran from 1966-1984) but been shown to be th motorcycle clutch e 80 cubic-inch green and orange FLH while using the black leather bags and fringe into it. Harley had the mock-up in the studio in the two-tone on yet the motorcycle still needed stripes. Back then, Drea says the theory team would usually tape it to discover the stripes due to convenience. But Willie G. wanted brussels to always be different, so he had Drea stripe this personally. Young drivers . had another job already set up for Ray in addition. At the time, Harley possessed a promo taking place ,Borse Gucci Outlet, due to its dealers and whoever sold the more bikes, The Motor Company would do up or even a bike and gives it therefore to their top-seller. Harley had brought a Glide in the studio and did a sweet splash of paint in it by having a small amount of colors, so Willie G. asked Drea if however stripe it and add the finishing touch by painting Willie G.’s signature on it. He continued to carry out projects for them like logos on tanks but didn’t jump on the Harley payroll as Sr. Industrial Design Stylist until 1993. His big break came in the end of 1992 as he was being employed by Calibre Inc., who had previously been doing via a tunnel the custom paint for Harley at that moment but does the paint on its CVO models today. Harley’s styling department was slammed hence they asked if and when they could bring a bicycle as many as him they will been in the pipeline as well as have Drea put his spin on it. Harley provided some initial design direction, like blacking-out the bike, but left the graphics and details nearly Drea. The project bike eventually became the ‘Bad Boy’ (1995-1997). What Drea didn’t know back then was the project was also an evaluation, when he steered the plan perfectly into a slightly different direction than originally planned, that decision helped seal the deal. Harley liked t brake clutch levers he results and afterward Willie G. approached Calibre about adding Drea in the team full-time. Businesses, he’s been Willie G.’s right-hand-man till the announcement of his retirement. Now he oversees everything, from styling for the top-tier CVOs to Sportsters by some with the core accessories that give the launch of brand new models. As an alternative to doing one-offs, he spearheads the task to design for the masses. “It’s a wide ‘nother level once you look at this design needs to be easily reproduced thousands of times so you’re pleasing countless people, not just one.” Drea's focus has changed from creating one-offs to designing motorcycles with mass appeal. Certainly one of his latest projects was the 2013 Harley Breakout. Designing a motorcycle great for selling in bulk has become difficulties challenge. Drea says a task in many cases originates with marketing saying anything from “Hey, this model is long through the tooth, it needs a refresh” to filling a perceived gap for consumers between two models. He added that establishing the baseline of “What let's do something do for this next model emanates from the voice belonging to the customer, it will come belonging to the voice of promoting saying ‘we have got identified this opportunity,’ and it can be very broad-based. We’re thinking foreign currency trading right here, we’re thinking this unique customer, we’re guessing there’s chance for this quantity volume.” The “project charter” as it’s called then heads to your styling department where they’re inspired to create a visual of ideas, to answer the question “what would that thing look like.” They’ll carry out a rendering first which then makes the whole rounds to build approval it will a 3-D version than it. Then it’s off for final approval before tooling up for production. Realize it's a huge, Drea says it’s are a extra robust process but what hasn’t really changed thinks about the problem within the customer first. That’s not to say Harley’s design department doesn’t do concept stuff simply because they still toss around what are called “Blue Sky” ideas who go beyond that,Gucci Outlet, ones aimed to exceed customer’s expectations. Drea knows a thing or two about exceeding expectations. Considering his current position as Harley’s Chief Stylist, it had become surprising to be controlled by the talented artist doesn't have any formal training, as such, other than learning face to face. Drea sa clutch lever id sometimes he’d pay a visit to workshops within the country, dependant upon what he was following during the time, and also for the greater degree he’s self-taught. “I set my sights on something and understand how to do it right. I’ve had the discussion about talent often with some other men and women who say ‘Well, it’s just something you’re born with.’ I reckon you’re born that has a adoration for something, not necessarily the talent. They have a passion or adoration for whatever that thing is which helps fuel the persistence to gain effective in it,” he explained.Drea wants to give back for the talent that has got provided a lot of for him, so 11 years back he soon began a conference in Milwaukee called Pinstripe Legends. Drea’s passion was stoked while very young. He all began a household of eight amazing oldest brother Don, who had previously been 15 years older t adjustable levers han Ray, was heavily in the motorcycling culture. Want his brother Don turned 16 he already had two Harleys,Borse Gucci Outlet, one a Panhead dressed-out with purple flake, white bags, white seat, and a radio placed on it. He also got a Knuckle chopper by having a Springer nose, slightly sissy bar, and upswept exhaust. Harleys have been in existence him since he was really a kid. On account of his brother Don’s influence, Drea has been capable to turn the romance for Harleys and hot rods perfectly into a long and illustrious career. And even though according to him he followed the procedure of Von Dutch and Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth from a distance, he was lucky enough to get have tremendously talented custom painters inside Milwaukee area to get inspiration from. One was Butch Brinza, who had an uncanny attention for detail and was the most important aspect people Drea knew who used candy paint. Brinza was recognized for creating a pearl manufactured from fish scales from Italy, too. Overall there's a thriving scene at the time in Milwaukee, from spray guns to pinstriping to mural work, leaving Drea plenty avenues of inspiration. It’s also where he perfected acquire pinstriping. Seeing that the method helps provide Drea having strategy for living, he gladly gives time for the art form that’s “given a lot of in my opinion.” Eleven yrs ago he soon began a meeting called “Pinstripe Legends” inside the winter Milwaukee Custom Car & Bike Show. As outlined by Drea, about 75 custom pinstripers from throughout the country arrive at the show and paint all weekend long, over tanks, fenders, you name it. Chances are they'll sell the artwork regularly with proceeds looking into Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Drea said it’s a great party, a great time for that great cause, only one of the significant reasons shortly fater he began that it was to get recognition for pinstriping as a art form. At once he was concerned that this art form had been lost, using recent years he’s seen resurgence. “Each striper has their own individual style,” he stated. Drea should become aware of. He takes its living listening to styles. In Daytona Beach, Drea was in town for the launch of your 2013 Harley Breakout, but we saw him making the rounds at Willie’s Tropical Tattoo Show and swap meets,Drea (far right, front row) seems as if a proud papa within a recent Pinstripe Legends event in the pair of artists that came to color and party. The artwork created at Pinstripe Legends is auctioned off to your Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. too, therefore asked him if just read was causes of ideas or inspiration. “Absolutely. Not alone for inspiration, but more to the point, gauging when or maybe some trends go mainstream. All of our bikes, typically, represents some sort of a trend. Like when Harley announced black denim. Which were an issue that I watched cardio, I saw that whole trend, black denim hot rods with the wide whites as well as red rims, make the transition from hot rods to motorcycles. “Coming from a motorcycle perspective, I saw these types of steam-pipey, nostalgic thing coming out of Japan almost 15-20 issue plus some of it revolved around these honest, raw finishes too, playoffs of your denims, coppers and brass and so on, and sometimes just rust. These people were keeping it with the patinas, but they are still patina finishes were gathering steam in Germany. Eventually, it went to the West Coast here, but where I saw a handful of these tools appearing more in volume was the LA Roadster Show. So I’ve been tracking these kinds of trends for many years, watching these trends and foreseeing should they go commercial.” Drea lets his hair down on top of a family holiday in Hawaii. So what exactly does Harley’s Chief Stylist do when he’s not predicting or setting trends? What else, he attempts to find time for his art. Often he gets talked in performing a cool splash of paint for that friend, or sometimes when a staff member is retiring or leaving the agency, he’ll paint up an existing as the going away present. Vehicles puts energy into his pinstriping event on top of that SportBike Levers as others he’s interested in and spends almost all of his time giving in to what he is doing best, his art. He somehow finds time to build up a café racer project he’s got going on right away. Before that, he built a ’32 Ford that has a Flathead from it. But he’s also got two young kids in your home who consume his time. But this doesn’t take him far away from his art. He recently helped his son Will by having a class project where they created the image people Lady of Guadalupe on the wood board using enamels and gold leaf, providing a way for Drea not only to spend time adjustable handle in reference to his son, but to mention is essential laying gold leaf with him also. His other son has taken a Latin class where they’re doing chariot races so Drea have been helping him by flaming it up and lettering it. Whether in the workplace or in your house, he breathes art, exhales motorcycles and hot rods, of course, if there’s anything including a rightful heir to Willie G.’s throne, Drea is a man.
